Things You’ll Regret Not Doing On Your Wedding Day

Your wedding day is one of the most important and memorable days of your life. As a photographer, I’ve witnessed countless ceremonies and receptions, capturing the emotions, interactions, and small yet significant details. Over time, I’ve noticed that there are certain elements and moments which, if neglected or overlooked, can lead to regret. Here’s a comprehensive guide on things you’ll regret not doing on your wedding day to ensure it’s memorable and beautifully captured!

One of the most overlooked aspects of the wedding day is the preparation time. Brides and grooms often underestimate how long it takes to dress, do hair and makeup, and deal with any last-minute changes. To avoid being rushed and stressed, allocate ample time in your schedule for these tasks. Getting ready photos beautifully capture the anticipation and excitement of the day, including candid moments with your bridal party and family members.

2. First Look: To Do or Not To Do?

A ‘first look’ is a private moment where the bride and groom see each other before the ceremony. It’s a romantic and intimate time that allows for genuine reactions to be captured away from the gaze of your guests! If you’re hesitant about this tradition, consider the emotional and photographic benefits it brings. It can also help ease wedding day nerves, and give you a few moments together before the festivities of the day.

3. Prioritize a Detailed Shot List

Work with your photographer to create a detailed shot list that includes all the must-have images you desire. This list should encompass family portraits, specific details like heirloom jewelry or special decor, and key moments you want highlighted. Ensure you communicate any special requests, as leaving it to chance could result in missed opportunities.

4. Golden Hour Photos

The golden hour, which occurs during the hour before sunset, offers the most flattering, magical lighting for outdoor photography. Schedule some time during your reception to step outside with your photographer to capture some stunning sunset portraits. These images often turn out to be the most cherished and beautiful keepsakes from your wedding album.

5. Capture the Small Details

The day might seem like a whirlwind, but taking the time to document the smaller details adds layers to your wedding story. This includes the rings, invitations, bouquet, centerpieces, and even the wedding favors. These details are a testament to your careful planning and often carry personal significance.

6. Don’t Overlook Candids

While posed portraits are essential, candid photography truly captures the authentic spirit of your wedding day. Encourage your photographer to roam around and take candid shots of guests enjoying themselves. These spontaneous moments often reflect the joy and emotion of the day more genuinely than posed shots.

7. Hire a Second Shooter

If your budget allows, consider hiring a second photographer. A second shooter can capture different angles, moments happening simultaneously, and provide a wider range of coverage. This means that while one photographer is focused on the first dance, the other can be capturing the reactions of your guests.

8. Mental Breaks and Breathers

Pause and take mental snapshots of your day. Sometimes, couples get so caught up in the hustle and bustle that they forget to savor the moment. Take brief breaks with your spouse to look around and soak it all in – these private moments are invaluable and will be cherished in your memories forever.

9. Include an ‘Unplugged Ceremony’ Notice

Consider having an ‘unplugged ceremony’ by requesting your guests to refrain from using their devices during the actual ceremony. This ensures that your professional photographer gets unimpeded shots, avoiding distractions caused by guests leaning in the aisles or holding up phones.

10. Personal Touches and Traditions

Lastly, personalize your wedding with touches that reflect your relationship and shared history. Whether it’s a unique ritual, a special dance, or custom vows, these personal elements make your wedding truly yours and result in memorable, heartfelt images.

Remember, at the heart of your wedding day is the celebration of your love and commitment to one another. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of planning, but taking a step back to prioritize what truly matters – capturing heartfelt, authentic, and unrepeatable moments – will give you memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime. So, as you dive into the planning process, keep these tips in mind to enrich your wedding day experience, ensuring that each moment is beautifully and meaningfully documented. Here’s to creating a day that you’ll look back on with nothing but joy!
